(Protected Designation of Origin) status. Ever since 1704 and the creation of the so-called \u201caqua mirabilis\u201d, a toilet water later to become known as \u201ceau de Cologne\u201d, the product has been principally used in the perfume and cosmetics industries. However, in recent times, Bergamot has also found increasing use in the pharmaceutical sector, thanks to its antibacterial, antiseptic, antiviral and antifungal properties.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"alignfull bloccoFotoVidContainer\" >\n    <div class=\"bloccoFotoVid\">\n        <div class=\"overlay\"><\/div>\n\n        <img decoding=\"async\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.consorzioditutelabergamottorc.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/essenza-686x1030-1-e1700658697893.jpg\" alt=\"\">\n    \n        <div class=\"testi\">\n                            <span>\n                    <p>\n                        In 2001, a European Union decree awarded P.D.O. (protected designation of origin) status to \u201cBergamotto di Reggio Calabria \u2013 Olio essenziale\u201d. This decree contains a series of guidelines regarding the cultivation of the fruit, the process of extracting the essential oil and its marketing.                    <\/p>\n                <\/span>\n                                <span>\n                    <p>\n                         It also names the official body responsible for checking and certifying the quality and authenticity of the product. Indeed, a series of specific tests have to be carried out on the \u201cBergamotto di Reggio Calabria \u2013 Olio essenziale\u201d before it can be formally certified and marketed.                    <\/p>\n                <\/span>\n                                <span>\n                    <p>\n                        The \u201cConsorzio di Tutela del Bergamotto di Reggio Calabria\u201d (Consortium for the Protection of the Bergamot of Reggio Calabria) was established in 2007, thanks to the tenacity of a group of wholesale Bergamot producers, plus various processors and packagers. This group, headed by their lawyer, Ezio Pizzi, managed to gain recognition for their Consortium by the Ministry of Agriculture the following year.                    <\/p>\n                <\/span>\n                \n\n    \n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only a year after its foundation, the \u201c<strong>Consorzio di Tutela del Bergamotto<\/strong>\u201d managed to fulfil the criteria required of these protective Consortiums by law. The requirements involve: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 <strong>Ensuring<\/strong> that the product is made according to the <strong>strict<\/strong> rules set out in the production guidelines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 <strong>Protecting<\/strong> the product from imitations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 <strong>Promoting<\/strong> and <strong>spreading<\/strong> awareness of the product and its consumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Enhancing and improving the quality of the product to <strong>safeguard<\/strong> its typical character and special features.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These Consortiums are also entrusted with the important and sensitive task of managing the brands and labels which indicate conformity with the <strong>P.D.O.<\/strong> regulations. The law therefore entrusts the Consortiums with overseeing the production and marketing of the product, and each individual Consortium employs <strong>supervisory agents<\/strong> to carry out this task.
